In his farewell address to the leadership of the Ephesian church, the Apostle Paul reveals the motivation for his life, and he does so by using two small words: If Only.
"And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace." (emphasis mine)
These verses have got me thinking about my life. What is my "if only"? What is the one task that supersedes all others in my life? What is the one assignment that God has called me to complete? What is the fuel that supplies my life with the necessary energy required to endure the hardships and setbacks of life without giving up?
I have to think about it. Whatever it is, discovering it seems to be important in the overall scheme of my life and walk with God.
